Tomatoes are such a versatile fruit (or vegetable) and we don’t realise how much we actually use it in our daily diet.
They have the following health benefits when eaten in moderation:
- Relieves dryness and thirst
- Tonifies the stomach and cleans the liver
- Purifies the blood and detoxifies the body
- Encourages digestion
- Helps relieve high blood pressure
Caution: Tomatoes are a part of the nightshade family and contain a bitter poisonous alkaloid called ‘Solanine’ which depletes the body of calcium. People with arthritis should avoid eating tomatoes altogether.
Try cutting tomatoes out of your diet for 2 weeks and see how you feel. Especially if you suffer with aches and pains.
TIP: Always buy fresh, local produce. There will be more pesticides used in imported produce to keep it fresh for longer and for the best flavour, store your tomatoes at room temperature.
