Understanding Cravings

Everyone experiences cravings at one time or another but have you ever stopped to think why?

The body is an amazing machine -it knows when to go to sleep, wake up, go to the bathroom and maintain a body temperature of 98.6 degrees! Your heart never misses a beat and your lungs are always breathing. The body never makes a mistake. Many people view cravings as a bad thing or a weakness but it’s your body’s way of sending you important messages and assisting you in maintaining balance.

The next time you experience a craving, take a moment and deconstruct it, ask yourself what does my body want and why? Once you understand this you will learn how to understand and control your cravings.

6 Possible causes of cravings:

Dehydration – this occurs initially as mild hunger until you reach the point when you really are on the verge of dehydration. Drink a full glass of water at the first sign of a strange craving.

Emotional Eating - filling the void in your life whether it be relationships, boredom, stress or lack of exercise.

Seasonal – the body craves foods that balance out the elements of the season.

Lack of nutrients – simple really, if the body has inadequate nutrients, it will produce odd cravings.

Hormona (women) - when the body experiences any hormonal changes this may cause strange cravings.

Yin/Yang balance – certain foods are expansive (Yin) while others are contractive (Yang). If you eat too many of one type it creates an imbalance. The Yin/Yang concept is all about maintaining balance in your diet.

Trust your body and the messages it sends you.
